Terri Haugen Traditional and Not So Batik Workshop and Retreat. June 8-12 2009

REGISTRATION DEADLINE APRIL 20, 2009

This will be a low-key, fun workshop, designed for the beginner and those who want to explore non-traditional ways to use wax and color to create art and or designer cloth. We will have 5 days to create, make new friends and enjoy this beautiful northern Michigan resort town with a few surprises thrown in.

The workshop
It will be held at the La Rue House Bed and Breakfast in the quaint village of Elberta, Mi.
The first 2-3 days we will work on the traditional batik method of waxing on cloth and tub dyeing. We will start with an idea and take it through all the waxing and dyeing steps to wax removal and mounting the finished work. We'll explore the different tools and supplies and how to use them. No drawing skills are necessary. Terri will talk to each student about their goals, before the workshop, and provide inspiration or drawings to those who need them. The last 2-3 days of the workshop we will play with non-traditional methods of batik on cloth and paper, including different ways to use them in mixed media art or quilts. We'll end the session with a lesson in mounting, matting and framing our work. On the evening of our final day we'll hold an art reception on the premises of the La Rue House, open to the public, complete with hors d'oeuves, wine and entertainment.

About the Retreat
Terri wanted to hold this workshop in a very special place, which included special hosts, Bill and Jan Buck , who own the La Rue House. They have lived and traveled all over the world and their experiences and adventures have influenced their love of art, food and people of many cultures. The La Rue House is an historic Victorian Painted Lady, where Jan was born. It was built by a lumber baron, circa 1890, and purchased by Jan's grandparents, Dr. Frank and nurse Ellen La Rue, in 1918. They Practiced medicine here for many years and now it has been lovingly restored and furnished with period pieces, many original to the house. It is located very close to Lake Michigan beaches which inspired several of Terri's favorite batiks, including "Shell Seekers", "Wave Watchers". And "Hand in Hand".

The workshop will be held on the property, in and around the Carriage House. The Workshop fees will include most supplies, all accommodations, Continental Breakfasts and taxes for the five-day Retreat.
